Urgent Prayer Request - Update # 2
Today (May 12) marks a week since the city of Tucuman has closed down Betel Baptist Church here in Tucuman. This has been a total shock and surprise to this missionary and to all the members of the church. Bethel Baptist Church founded by Pastor Missionary Larry Owens 22 years ago has always been a thriving and growing church. Lately we have been averaging close to 500 in attendance. The property of the church consist of only 7,250 square feet. On this property we have the auditorium of close to 3,000 square feet. The auditorium seats 300 people. On this same property we have the Bible College with 20 beds for the college students.
I have been working on this project all day every day for the last week. We currently have up to a dozen men at the church volunteering their time to do the necessary repairs. So far we have been able to do some electrical work and cement work with the help from the men.
We have been told that somebody lodged a complaint against the Baptist Church and for this reason the city of Tucuman has closed the church down.
The request or law that we have to abide by is some laws that we did not know existed. We need to have a city permit to hold public services - another permit that says our bathrooms and kitchen meet the city code - and also the fire department wants us to change many things so the church is ready for an emergency evacuation. All these rules and regulations are good for us and we are not fitting anybody. We want to abide by all these codes. We look at this as a blessing!!
This passed weekend I was sick with a cold, fever, and headache. Praise the Lord that now I'm feeling a lot better.
The fire department inspectors showed up at the church Monday evening for an inspection. I was not their at the time as well as many others. So the fire inspector is coming back this morning to talk to us and explain to us all the changes that will need to be made.
Let me give you a list of some the items that need to be done: Installation of emergency lights, installing of a drop down ceiling in the auditorium, put ceramic tile on the walls of the men and ladies bathroom, put a floor and ceramic tile on the wall of the kitchen, put dry wall up in some ceilings to cover up electrical wires, and put two new front doors that swing out for emergency evacuation. The arquitect that works with me has given me the price of how much each items will cost to fix.
The amount of money that is needed is way up into the thousands of dollars. The men of the church are praying that through the offering here we can pay for the entire project. We have taken up two offering and money have been given to me from many different sources. Praise the Lord!! Please pray for this need!!
Please pray for this situation!! My main concern is that the city officials will give us time to complete all the necessary repairs. So far we have been given permission to operate by word of mouth but the closing of the church will not be lifted until all the city codes are met and we pass the final inspection.
We have received many notes from all over the world saying that they are praying for us. Just a quick note from you saying that you are praying will encourage me in the work.
May God bless you richly!!
